Hydration is an important component of overall health. Good hydration helps to regulate your body temperature, as well as lubricate your joints, and keep your organs working properly.
How do I stay well hydrated?
Men require approximately 3.7 litres (15.5 cups) of water a day, and women need 2.7 litres (11.5 cups) in order to stay hydrated. Other forms of liquid contribute to your daily hydration requirement too! You can switch up your water with non caffeinated, unsweetened herbal teas, or spice it up with a splash of lemon juice. High water content fruits and vegetables also contribute to good hydration.
Always pay attention to factors that affect your daily hydration. You will need to drink more if you are exercising, if it’s a hot day, and especially if you are sick. Things like diarrhea and vomiting can dehydrate you very quickly.
Build good hydration habits. Drink water with your meals, and in between meals. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after exercise, and always drink if you are feeling thirsty!
How do I know if I am properly hydrated?
If your urine is light yellow to clear in colour, and you rarely experience thirst, you are probably well hydrated!
