Chiropractic Care

Doctors of Chiropractic are experts in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of conditions and disorders related to the spine, nervous system and musculoskeletal system; this includes the back, neck, head, pelvis, and extremity joints.

Conditions and disorders can present themselves as:

  • Chronic or acute pain/discomfort
  • Strains & sprains
  • Injury from repetitive use
  • Limited range of motion in the back, shoulder, neck or limbs

Our chiropractors work with you to resolve pain, discomfort and restricted range of motion. They are trained to create rehabilitation plans and help you with injury prevention. Sometimes this includes referrals for other therapeutic options (eg. massage, shockwave therapy).

Why Choose Chiropractic?

Everything—from your spine and nerves, to your muscles and organs—works with, relies on, and affects the other. When one area is experiencing strain, pain, or stress, the rest of the body responds.

That is why chiropractic treatment is so effective: it takes every part of the body into consideration and looks to target the source of your pain.

Whether the onset of your pain is from a sudden injury, or you’ve suffered from chronic pain for as long as you can remember, your body is designed to heal. Pain is not something to “accept” or “tolerate” in any measure.

Types of Care

Chiropractic Care for Individuals

Pain is a stranger to no one. For most people, the day-to-day  of office life and home life can put strain on your body. Chiropractic care can offer treatment of acute or chronic pain, as well as offer injury prevention and better mobility/function.

Chiropractic Care for Athletes

Whether you’re a professional athlete, a recreational one, or your work is highly physical – chiropractic care offers tools to treat injuries, prevent injuries, prepare for  an event, and care for your body post-event.

Chiropractic Care for Pediatrics

Chiropractic care helps prepare and heal your body through the stages of pregnancy, as well as post-natal stages. It also a gentle tool for encouraging your infant and/or toddler’s growth and development.

SUDDEN INJURY TREATMENT

Back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and knee pain are among the most common symptoms we see from a sudden injury. We can quickly assess the source of your pain and help treat it quickly by offering chiropractic treatment for injuries.

When the sudden pain you’re experiencing stems from irritation or injury to your nervous system, or from trauma to the muscles, joints and the vascular system, chiropractic is one of the most effective means of achieving pain relief because of how it targets the root of the problem.

Chiropractors are also trained in other therapies that can further the success of your treatment for sudden pain when coupled with chiropractic, such as:

  • Graston Technique
  • Active Release Therapy
  • Active Isolated Stretching
  • Shockwave Therapy

These manual therapies all have their benefits in chronic pain management and — in many cases — the complete elimination of pain.

CHRONIC PAIN TREATMENT

No one is a stranger to pain. But when that pain becomes a constant in your day to day life, you can trick yourself into believing that pain is just something you need to “deal” with.

Chronic Pain is a pain that reoccurs frequently and remains active for weeks, months, or even years – and is often dismissed because you’re often told it’s “a part of life”. It can be broken down into two categories, where intermittent pain happens in waves and persistent pain lasts for 12 or more hours for a few months at a time.

Relief for Chronic Pain through Chiropractic

When the chronic pain you’re experiencing stems from irritation or injury to your nervous system, or from irregular function of muscles, joints and the vascular system, chiropractic is one of the most effective means of achieving pain relief because of how it targets the root of the problem.

Chiropractors are also trained in other therapies that can further the success of your treatment for chronic pain when coupled with chiropractic, such as:

These manual therapies all have their benefits in chronic pain management and – in many cases – the complete elimination of pain.

Chiropractic Care for Athletes

Whether you’re a professional athlete, a recreational one, or your work is highly physical – chiropractic care offers tools to treat injuries, prevent injuries, prepare for  an event, and care for your body post-event.

SPORT INJURY TREATMENT

Those who participate in sports (professional or recreational) use one tool over and over again: their bodies. Chiropractic care, when tailored to help support your athletic goals, can help treat sport injuries – and help prevent sport injuries from occurring. We are one of the leading Calgary sport injury treatment centres.

What are the benefits of Chiropractic Care for professional athletes and recreational sport players alike?

  •  Sport injury treatments that are fast and effective

  • Quicker return to activities after an injury

  • Better overall sport performance

  • Fewer sport injuries

  • Quicker recovery after activities due to on-going body care

Chiropractic treatments for sport injuries help athletes and recreational sport players get back in the game faster:

When you’re an athlete, it isn’t enough to target the symptoms of your pain: chiropractic treatment for sport injuries helps treat soft tissue (muscle, tendon and ligament) at the core, as well as restores spinal function to remove nerve interference in cases where stress and specific repetitive movement have put pressure on the vertebrae – forcing a misalignment.

This not only helps you achieve pain relief, but it promotes faster and proper healing of your soft tissue – which can encourage more mobility and flexibility that you might not have had before.

Some of the more common sport injuries that can be successfully treated with a chiropractic treatment plan are:

  • Shoulder injuries

  • Hamstring injuries

  • Knee injuries

  • Foot and ankle injuries

Treatment plans vary greatly from athlete to athlete. Some plans only require chiropractic care; spinal care and soft tissue manipulation to help resolve pain and promote quick healing. Others include the use of supporting therapies such as ART, Graston, and Shockwave Therapy for additional support in sport injury treatment.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Chiropractic care can help with the healthy development of your child’s posture.

Chiropractic treatment is based upon basic biological and physiological sciences that apply to children from birth to full development – just as they do to the adult. It can also be a healthy, natural way of helping your child maintain proper neuromusculoskeletal functions through the many activities he or she may participate in – like sports, play, tumbles and more.

Chiropractic Care for Children can help with:

  • Movement: maintaining smooth, comfortable movement when moving head, spine, body and limbs

  • Range of Motion: being sure full range of motion is kept in all limbs, head and body

  • Posture: helping/avoiding any postural alignment issues and/or stresses

  • Hips and Legs: helping/avoiding hip alignment and pelvic issues and/or stresses

  • Gait and running analysis: ensuring your child’s walking/running pattern normal for his/her age

Common Questions

Click on the questions below to find our answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.

Once you get a chiropractic treatment, do you always have to go back?

Recommending that patients return for periodic visits is no different than dentists recommending monthly to yearly visits to help prevent cavities and gum disease. After resolving your pain issues, most chiropractors will give you the option to receive periodic chiropractic care to minimize the likelihood of future recurrences or development of new problems. But it’s still just an option which you can choose to take advantage of, or not.

Are Chiropractors really cracking bones?

Between the bones that make up a joint, you will find an envelope with fluid in it. When a chiropractor gently shifts a joint back to where it’s supposed to be, the envelope releases gas that’s in the joint fluid, and that creates the sound you hear.

Do Chiropractors only work on joints and not soft tissue?

While chiropractors are definitely known for manual manipulations and adjustments, they can also receive special certificates/training to provide very effective treatment for a huge variety of different soft tissue disorders. Therapies like Graston Technique ®, Active Release Therapies ® and Shockwave Therapy are all modules that chiropractors can choose to get certified for. This provides them with even m tools to help conditions of the joints of  extremities, like the ankle, knee and shoulder.

Do adjustments hurt?

They don’t! However, some some adjustments can require that quite a bit of pressure be applied to a certain area of your body. This can produce some discomfort if you’re sensitive from the pain you’ve been experiencing. Your chiropractor can, and will, modify adjustments to your needs and comfort level.

Do Chiropractors offer pre-paid plans?

When it comes to the treatment plan you develop for yourself with the help of your chiropractor, subsequent visits may be necessary. Some chiropractors offer convenient pre-paid care packages. Should you decide not to complete a course of treatment, any unused fees will be refunded.

What is a Chiropractic maintenance plan?

Your chiropractor will collaborate with you on a maintenance plan: this can include anything from step-by-step stretches, exercises, or  changes to routine that you can follow on your own.  You’ll find that the benefits of the care you’ve received are prolonged and the risks or re-injuring yourself are lower.

How many visits will I need?

There is no “one size fits all” formula for the duration of a chiropractic treatment plan. Your doctor will assess your needs at the beginning of your treatment plan, and continue to do so throughout its execution, adjusting as required. Your treatment plan is unique to you!

How long are Chiropractic appointments?

Appointment lengths can vary depending on the kind of treatment required. Your initial visit can take up to an hour, as your chiropractor will spend time discussing your case, and working with you to determine a plan that works best for you.

How do I know when to see a Chiropractor?

The work and play of daily living puts strain on our bodies. As a result, you may suffer from headaches, migraines, neck, back, or joint pain. Alternatively, you may have pain due to an injury, accident, illness or long-term condition.

But you don’t have to have pain to consider seeing us. Chiropractors can be instrumental in education around prevention. Schedule a free consult to see if we can help.

What does a chiropractor do?

Chiropractors help relieve pain, allowing patients to live active, and pain-free lives. They utilize a hands-on, non-invasive, and drug-free approach that is safe and effective. Treatment modalities can include a variety of manual “adjustment” techniques to soft tissue therapies, needling, shockwave, exercise rehabilitation, and patient education.

What do I wear to a chiropractor?

First and foremost, comfort is key!

You will likely be asked to lie down, you may be asked to show your range of motion, or demonstrate some stretches. Ideally, the clothing will allow full range of movement. Clothes that are stretchy, like yoga pants, will be most comfortable. Tight jeans, belts, and short tight skirts, would be more restrictive.

How often should you go to the chiropractor?

Everyone, and every condition, is individual. It is also important for your chiropractor to adjust to how your body responds to chiropractic treatment. Ultimately, you — and your chiropractor — decide how often you need an adjustment. By knowing your body and how it responds to adjustments, you can decide what works best for you.

Multiple factors can provide insight into the recommended frequency of your visits.

  • How severe is your pain/injury?
  • How long have you had it?
  • Overall health and activity levels – certain people respond faster to treatment.
  • What are your goals? Everything from increased range of motion to running pain free is factored in to your plan.

Treatment plans can vary greatly – people who have had pain for a long time, or have a more severe injury may, in the initial phases, receive the best results from seeing the chiropractor 2-3 times a week for a few weeks, and then tapering down. Those in a more optimal state may find that chiropractic care at once per month works well for them, and others may simply come in when the pain returns.

What to expect at the chiropractor?

On your initial visit, your chiropractor will ask questions related to your health. It’s important that they know about the pain that you are experiencing, previous injuries, medication you are taking, and any surgeries. After understanding your condition, they will do an exam, which may involve range of motion testing, orthopedic testing, strength testing, and reflexes. Sometimes imaging (x-rays) may be requested in order to rule out certain conditions. The chiropractor will then explain what may be causing your condition and provide a variety of therapeutic options. You will work together to come up with a treatment plan.
