Types of Massage

Sports Massage

As a leading Calgary Sports Massage Centre, we focus on building a working relationship with you so that we understand your athletic goals, sport, and needs for both before and after your events.

PRE-EVENT PREPARATION
A pre-event sports massage is a highly useful tool that supports both your mental and physical preparation for your sport event. It can help ensure peak athletic condition, especially when your dedicated massage therapist understands your body and your sport.

What are the benefits of a Pre-Event Sports Massage?

  • Reduces muscle tension
  • Increasing flexibility to prevent injuries
  • Preventing adhesions in soft tissues from repetitive movements or strain from training
  • Stimulates circulation of the blood

What considerations are made during your Pre-Event Sports Massage?

  • Temperature of your body: Although a pre-event sports massage is not suggested AFTER your pre-event warm up, your massage therapist will work with you to prepare your body for the pre-event sports massage by getting the circulation moving. Once your body is warm, your massage therapist will focus on flexibility.
  • Level of anxiousness: Being nervous prior to an event is normal, but your massage therapist can focus on specific motions to help calm muscle tension.

POST EVENT RECOVERY

A post-event sports massage supports both your mental and physical recovery from your sport event. The goal of a post-event sports massage is to encourage quicker recovery and return to training without the usual stiffness and soreness you may experience otherwise. It is also to identify any injuries you may have sustained during your event.

What are the benefits of a Post-Event Sports Massage?

  • Drains away fatigue
  • Relieves swelling and joint pain by stimulating soft tissues to reduce collection of fluids, which also improves the removal of tissue waste, carried by the body’s lymph system
  • Encourages the body to recover from hard training and competition
  • Increases flexibility to prevent injuries
  • Preventing adhesions in soft tissues from repetitive movements or strain from training
  • Stimulates circulation of the blood to promote healing
  • Offers a quick assessment of your body: Identifies injuries and more serious medical conditions (heat exhaustion or hypothermia).

Prenatal Massage

Using Prenatal Massage Therapy as part of your care during pregnancy can greatly increase your overall comfort at different stages of your baby’s development.

Postnatal massage therapy can also promote quick recovery and better management of common discomforts associated with postpartum symptoms.

PRENATAL MASSAGE

What are the benefits of Prenatal Massage Therapy?

  • Reduces back pain and muscle tension: your ligaments, muscles, discs and joints can be easily irritated or inflamed from the weight of your body and baby – and your own fatigue.
  • Improves nerve pain: Sciatic nerve pain can occur when the uterus begins to apply more pressure from resting on the muscles of the pelvic floor and lower back. This spreads tension to the muscles of the upper and lower leg, causing them to swell and impair the function of nearby nerves. Pain or pins and needles are common symptoms of this. Massage therapy helps release the tension on nearby muscles, which helps soothe the inflamed nerves.
  • Reduces joint pain and/or edema (swelling): Swelling of the limbs and joints during pregnancy is often caused by reduced circulation and increased pressure on the major blood vessels in your pelvis by your uterus. Massage helps to stimulate soft tissues to reduce collection of fluids in swollen joints, which also improves the removal of tissue waste, carried by the body’s lymph system.

Prenatal Therapy should be cleared with your physician…

All expectant mothers should check with their doctors prior to getting a massage. If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, or are on the early stages of pregnancy, prenatal massage may not be recommended.

POSTNATAL MASSAGE

What are the benefits of Postnatal Massage?

  • Strengthens abdominal muscles, which may be weak after childbirth
  • Relieves cramping that you may experience as the site where the placenta was attached within your uterus heals
  • Relieves soreness of your pelvic floor from an episiotomy or tearing
  • Helps sooth as your intestinal tract and urinary bladder reposition themselves
  • Promotes scar healing; you may have built up scar tissue that needs to be broken down so that it can realign more naturally
  • Helps re-establish pelvic structural alignment; in preparation for childbirth, hormones were released to help ‘soften’ the pelvic bones so that they can easily shift
  • Targets back, neck and shoulder pain

Postnatal Massage Therapy is more than just physical support…

All mothers can benefit from regular post-natal massage therapy during the postpartum period – and not just because the physical discomforts and symptoms are addressed. There is an emotional aspect to taking the time to care for your body that helps with Postpartum Depression.

Types of Massage

Massage Calgary

As a leading Calgary Massage Centre, we focus on building a working relationship with you so that we understand your goals,  be it in sport, to get out of pain or just to de-stress.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy can help reduce pain, muscle soreness and tension, improve range of motion, relieve chronic pain, and speed up recovery from an injury. It also improves circulation, reduces stress and can help prevent injuries.

Our therapists will work with you to design a treatment plan that will effectively help you achieve your goals.

Hot Stone Massage

The warmth of the stones allows for more blood flow, effectively helping to release any built-up tension.

The heat and the smoothness of the stones rolling over the muscles are marvellous. More rejuvenating than a Swedish massage, but still relaxing.

If you have never tried one, it is a must!

*While beneficial for most people, certain individuals may benefit more from other therapies.

Please let your therapist know, when booking a massage if you are booking an appointment, for children, a pregnant person or cardiac patients.

Relaxation Massage

Stressed? Overworked? Don’t have time to get away on a vacation?  Take a little time to get in for a relaxation massage and melt away that stress.

This mild to medium pressure therapy is also ideal for the first-time massage client.

It is excellent for improving circulation, reducing tension and providing an overall sense of well-being.

The goal here isn’t necessarily to find the painful spots and go to town – that isn’t the definition of relaxation!

Cupping

Described in one of the oldest medical textbooks, Egyptians used cupping as far back as 1550 B.C. Though gaining popularity in western utilization, it is not a new therapy.

Our therapists utilize both static (leaving the cup on the skin) and dynamic (moving the cup over the skin) cupping.

This therapy tends to be on the deeper side of the massage spectrum, and benefits can include faster recovery, decreased tension, increases circulation, and encouraging tissues to release toxins.

Essential oil

Also known as aroma therapy massage, this form of massage incorporates the use of different essential oils and oil blends.

Deep Tissue or Sports Massage

Do you have a goal? Is it to get fit, run your first race, compete in a fitness competition, do that Ironman?

Injury prevention and treatment are the goals of this type of massage.

Regardless of whether you lift weights, run, swim, bike, paddle, or play a sport, you are likely doing some repetitive activity.  This may contribute to tightness, which could lead to an injury.

The pressure with this therapeutic massage can range from medium to moderate, to deep. Targeting tight muscles, injured tissues and scar tissue in order to alleviate pain and restore motion, thus preventing further injuries.

Pre and post-event massages will vary the pressure depending on your event.

Pregnancy Massage

As your body goes through pregnancy – changes happen.

Your center of gravity shifts, different muscles have to work harder, and activities can become more difficult, even simple things, like standing up.

Massage therapy can help ease the changes.  As your pregnancy progress and changes,  so will the therapists’ techniques and positions.

From utilizing specifically designed pillows, to performing side lying massages, they will accommodate your changing body’s needs.

Your comfort will always be top of mind!

Pregnancy massage is safe for all phases of your pregnancy, however, if you have underlying health conditions you should always discuss them with our therapists.

What People Say About Us.

When I was living in Calgary, I saw R.M.T Jen Krotech weekly for her Sports Massage Therapy, and Dr. Jamila Abdulla for a series of Graston sessions to help some bad scar tissue build up in my shoulders. Then I moved to Key Largo, where I haul scuba tanks and dive on the regular. I was fine for awhile before my body started reacting the change in lifestyle — and when that happened, I didn’t hesitate to call Dr. Abdulla. She took time out of her schedule to talk me through different things I could do to stay fit and healthy. There aren’t many people of her and Jen’s calibre…I trust them completely.

– Michelle

My entire left side was badly mangled after a car accident. I chose to go with the Chiropractic Health Centre because they specialize in MVA cases and I wasn’t disappointed. I was able to see both the chiropractor (Dr. Jamila Abdulla) and the massage therapist (Jen Krotech) and was impressed with how they asked permission to work together, and did a great job. They communicated their thoughts on my treatment plan. They also were very timely with my claim submissions. It was a scary time for me but they both made me feel comfortable and in control. I appreciate their professionalism and dedication to my care.

– Melissa

I started seeing Jen while I was pregnant with my first child. She relieved my lower back pain and helped me to be able to continue with my fitness/workout schedule. I continued to see her during my second pregnancy which was more painful but her massages really helped to relieve the pain I had in my hips, back and neck. I have continued seeing her since then. She is a great massage therapist, is very personable and listens really well and works with you to develop a plan to help you recover.
