As we head into our second “COVID Summer,” many of the usual activities we’d register the kids for are looking a lot different. There could be fewer spaces, more restrictions, and some are cancelled altogether. Studies have shown that children should have at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, and pre-school aged children need even more! So how do you keep kids active?

Take advantage of local parks, green spaces, playgrounds, and even your own back yard for some good old running around, or other unstructured play, maintaining the required social distancing. You could kick a ball around, have an impromptu soccer game, or make up your own game! Another fun activity is a mini fitness challenge. How long does it take to complete 10 jumping jacks?

There is always the family bike ride as well! Calgary has an amazing network of bike paths. You can check out a map right here: https://maps.calgary.ca/PathwaysandBikeways/

If you’re taking advantage of your yard, how about a scavenger hunt for some physical activity?

You can also take a family nature walk. Both Nose Hill and Fish Creek park are right here in town, and each offers amazing opportunities to learn about our animal neighbours. Check out what local birds live in each park, and see how many you can spot on your walk!

We do live in Calgary, and sometimes our weather can be… unpredictable. When it rains, and no one wants to play outside, maybe it’s time to learn a new dance? Youtube has lots of dance routines for kids of all ages and levels. Who knows? Parents might want to give them a try as well. Dance party time!
