Inflammation is your body’s natural response to injury or infection. When you get hurt, or become ill, your immune system releases lots of white blood cells, which then surround and protect the affected area. This response can cause redness, swelling, and warmth. However, sometimes inflammation can become chronic. This is often subtle at first, but can become worse over time, leading to things like pain, or fatigue.
Did you know that what you eat can play a part in helping you feel better?
A diet high in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains can help. Some great fruit and vegetable choices include cherries, berries, broccoli, mushrooms, peppers, watermelon, and grapes. Try to use healthy fats such as olive oil, avocados, and consume more fatty fish like mackerel, salmon, and sardines as an alternative to red meat and butter. Limit your dairy intake to small amounts. Green tea can also aid in reducing inflammation, and we can’t forget dark chocolate!
Reducing the amount of salt you use can also be helpful. It’s also a great excuse to experiment with what’s in your spice cupboard. Some spices, like turmeric, garlic, ginger, and cinnamon even have anti-inflammatory properties as well as being delicious. Help could be as close as your pantry!
