“A ruffled mind makes a restless pillow.” — Charlotte Brontë
“We are such stuff as dreams are made on.” — William Shakespeare
The importance of sleep can’t be overstated. The average adult needs between 7 and 9 hours of sleep a night. Sleep helps the brain function correctly, helps us heal, and a good night’s rest helps keep us alert and safe during the day.
Consistency is a big part of sleeping well. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time, yep, even on the weekend! Cultivate good bedtime habits like no caffeine at night (including chocolate!) and avoiding large meals before bed. Put away your tablet or phone about two hours before you go to bed. If you can, keep it out of your bedroom altogether.
Comfort is key! Try to keep your bedroom dark, and the temperature mild. Sleep on your back, with a pillow under your knees, or if you’re a side sleeper, tuck one between your legs. Sleeping on your stomach keeps your head turned to one side, which can result in shortening of the neck muscles, leading to decreased range of motion. Try to avoid elevating your arms and shoulders.
